VC Tech to Host SkillsUSA High School Collision Competition

Press Release Body = VC Tech will be hosting the Collision Refinishing portion of the high school SkillsUSA Automotive Competition at its Pelham campus this Thursday and Friday, April 13th-14th. The Automotive portion of the competition will be held at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center (BJCC). Winners of both the Collision and Automotive competitions will advance to the national level competition.
"Having the honor to host the SkillsUSA collision competition again this year is a distinct honor for VC Tech, and we look forward to offering our support in the future," says Dick Daigle, Campus President.
During the competition, secondary and post-secondary students will be evaluated on a variety of tasks of a collision refinishing repair. Students will be judged by a panel industry experts from across the state. Winners from both Collision and Automotive competition will qualify for scholarships and will advance to the National SkillsUSA competition to be held in Kansas City this June.
The Collision portion of the competition requires contestants to repair a metal fender using metal finishing techniques and plastic body filler; refinish a panel including blending using new paint systems; perform a structural damage analysis including vehicle body alignment; use plastic identification and repair; perform GMA welding to the to the standards of the I-CAR Welding Qualification Test; give an estimation of a collision damaged vehicle, and take a written test. Contestants will be judged on the overall appearance of the finished product, speed and proper safety practices.
The entire SkillsUSA challenge is a two-day event beginning April 13th with registration at the BJCC and concluding on Friday, April 14th with presentation of awards to be held that afternoon.
